SDC Associateship
Designatory letters - CCol ASDC
This qualification is based on candidates demonstrating a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience within a colour-related occupation. It can widen your horizons and open up numerous opportunities for career advancement. It confirms to a potential employer your suitability for employment in a senior position in the industry and is widely accepted as the industry's premier technical qualification. It can also open the door to postgraduate research at higher education establishments.
Associates are spread throughout the coloration industry in technical and production management, in technical service and in marketing at levels up to and including managing directors; others are employed in academia as lecturers and teachers, especially for science and technology courses.
Candidates must be at least 23 years of age and have either:
- passed the prescribed examination
- or posses either an approved honours degree or higher degree in a relevant discipline, or any other qualification deemed by the Society to be of similar level and content awarded as a result of an examination conducted or supervised by a professional society
- have demonstrated his professional competence in applying his knowledge of colour
Candidates should have had at least four years’ experience in an approved occupation, from which a reduction of not more than two years may be allowed to a candidate who is the holder of a qualification having an appropriate coloration content
Candidates who wish to study for the Society's own examination should refer to the SDC Study Guide. Copies of recent examination papers can also be downloaded.
The fundamental core areas that candidates are obliged to study are: colour physics; chemistry of dyes, pigments and auxiliary chemicals; chemistry of polymers; and industrial organisation and management.
Most would-be Associates follow courses of study, part-time or full-time, at relevant educational establishments. It is, however, possible to prepare for the examination by private study, and the Society publishes a set of textbooks, which cover areas examined. Also, a distance-learning study package is available.
The regulations and guidelines covering SDC awards can be downloaded from this site. A list of current Chartered Colourists is also available.
