Designatory letters - LSDC

Licentiateship is a professional qualification awarded to individuals who have acquired a high level of theoretical knowledge of colour science or technology and have demonstrated the application of that knowledge in a practical context.

To qualify for election as a Licentiate, applicants must be in possession of either the Society's Certificate in Coloration or a qualification deemed by the Society to be of equivalent academic level (i.e. pass-degree level). They must also provide evidence of having appropriate experience in one or more branches of coloration (or in an associated discipline); be at least 23 years of age; and be members of the Society.

Candidates who wish to study for the Society's own examination should refer to the SDC Study Guide. Copies of recent examination papers can also be downloaded.

The fundamental core areas that candidates are obliged can be selected from: colour physics; chemistry of dyes, pigments and auxiliary chemicals; chemistry of polymers; and industrial organisation and management.

Most would-be Licentiates follow courses of study, part-time or full-time, at relevant educational establishments. It is, however, possible to prepare for the examination by private study, and the Society publishes a set of textbooks, which cover areas examined. Also, a distance-learning study package is available.

The regulations and guidelines covering SDC awards can be downloaded from this site.
