Certificate of Competence Course
Principles of Colour Measurement for Colour Matching
The course explores the use of colour measurement in colour matching applications of coloured goods in the textile, and other, industries. Although the course is designed specifically for the textile industry, many parts of the course will be of interest to those in other colour-using industries.
Successful completion of the course and the assessments, will result in the award of the Society's Certificate of Competence in the Principles of Colour Measurement for Colour Matching, which is valid for three years.
The one-day courses are aimed at:
- Operators and technicians for expansion/revision of their capabilities and understanding of colour match prediction
- Directors and managers who require overview of the advantages and limitations of colour match prediction.
The course will discuss the Kubelka-Munk theory, and will involve some mathematics, but this will be kept simple and be limited to that essential to the course aims. Each course covers the following:
- Introduction: visual vs computer, advantages and limitations
- Database construction: sources, repeatability, series, presentation and measurement checking
- Alternative substrates and dyeing methods
- Match prediction: software settings, selection of dyes, sorting recipes by metamerism, cost and the implications, blends
- Problems encountered: lab repeatability, lab to bulk reproducibility, no match possible and implications, dye interaction, fluorescence, finishing
- Corrections for lab and production recipes
- Shade library: benefits and limitations
- Feedback systems
- Care and maintenance of colour measurement systems.
It is a strong recommendation that attendees have been on the parallel SDC course Principles of Colour Measurement for Quality Control (or a similar course) or have experience in instrumental quality control.
Attendees are encouraged to bring samples and print-outs (where relevant) of problems encountered in their own lab for discussion, either during the course itself or in the intervals.
