We have a great line up of speakers, including the following:
Professor Robert Christie - Abstract
Colour Chemistry: by design and within design
This presentation will reflect on aspects of the presenter's long research career focused on the chemistry of dyes and pigments, an important feature of which has been the design of molecules based on computational methods, and on how more recently his colour science experience has led to involvement in research collaborations with textile designers. The presentation will be illustrated with examples of the outcomes of the research in design and fashion in which he has been involved, for example in interactive design applications of colour-changing textiles and in the development of eco-friendly concepts. Opinions will be expressed on the merits of operating at the interface between science and creatvity within colour, and on the opportunities presented by the interactions.
John Murphy - Abstract
A Chemical Supplier - What is the future?
John will focus on the following:
Indira Chauhan - Abstract
George in the Community
Indira will look at some of the projects undertaken by George in the local communities that supply George. The projects are either CSR based or they are an investment in improving the operational efficiency of their suppliers and their integration into the George approval process.
Martin Bide - Abstract
The Learned Society and its Evolving Role in Textile Coloration
As textile coloration moved from an art to a science, the details of this deceptively difficult practice moved from the shadows of the secret guild to the broader public domain, and the value of skilled and trained colourists was appreciated, welcomed, even demanded. Martin will take a fascinating look at the changing and evolving role of SDC and AATCC over the years, in response to the changing world of both education and coloration.
SPEAKER BIOGS
Professor Robert Christie - Biog
Bob obtained his BSc and PhD degrees from the University of St Andrews, followed by Postdoctoral positions at the Australian National University and the University of Aberdeen (funded by ICI Organics Division, Dyes). His subsequent career has included periods in industrial research with two international colour manufacturers, Ciba Pigments (now BASF, Paisley, Scotland) and Dominion Colour Corporation (Toronto, Canada). He has published around 100 journal articles and patents, and is author/co-author/editor of five textbooks, including Environmental Aspects of Textile Dyeing (Woodhead Publishing, 2007), Colour Chemistry (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2001, 2nd edition in preparation) and The Organic and Inorganic Chemistry of Pigments (2002, Oil and Colour Chemists Association). He continues to present plenary and invited lectures regularly at international conferences worldwide. His diverse research interests include organic pigments, fluorescent dyes, chromic materials and inkjet printing and, more recently in the design/technology interface. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Coloration Technology, Dyes and Pigments and the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research. He received the Worshipful Company of Dyers of London award for excellence in colour science in 2009 and the endowed Venkataraman Lectureship from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai in 2011.
