Message from SDC Chief Executive

Susie Hargreaves, SDC CEO

Over the past year we have been developing our profile and reputation in Bangladesh. Why Bangladesh? Well, its one of the biggest textile and garment economies in the world, with ready made garments accounting for 78% of Bangladeshi exports and it matters to many of our members who work there or depend on work from there!

Our strategy, led by Arthur Welham, Vice Chairman and Trustee with responsibility for Global Development, has visited Bangladesh and run a series of low cost seminars for people working across the textile supply chain. He has also organised meetings with key influencers to build our credibility. We have a small region in Dhaka and a committed and energetic Chairman in Mr Barmma. He has been aided on the ground by Parvez Kotadia, SDC India Country Manager and Rakesh Sachdev, SDC Trustee who have helped organise and deliver the events. The strategy is working – our events have been extremely well attended and the SDC is seen as a world leader with a first class reputation.

Having built some strong foundations, we are now ready to host a one day conference for the textile industry.

The Dhaka Water Catastrophe 2020 – What Can We Do About It?
Tuesday 30 November 2010, Dhaka, Bangladesh

The projection is for the population of Dhaka to increase to 25 million by 2025. Before then Dhaka will become uninhabitable due to contamination of both underground water sources and all surface water courses. Action is required urgently and as a major polluter, the textile dyeing industry must react. The only other alternative is for enforced industrial closure which will condemn Bangladesh to poverty and hardship, unprecedented in modern times. This event will cover:

The event is sponsored by DyStar (gold sponsors) and Huntsman (silver sponsors) and we have a conference advisory committee of decision makers shaping the event.

At the event we will relaunch our membership in Bangladesh.

Textiles-UK: Wool – the Cloth of Kings
Tuesday 5 October 2010, Clothworkers’ Hall, London (www.textiles-uk.org.uk)

Why are we running this event? We believe in the future of the UK textile industry and in invigorating the woollen industry and natural fibres. In the growing climate of synthetics for low prices, we believe natural fibres are important in helping to re-establish a higher value for cloth, garments and other products. We also believe in product development and innovation, and will look at where wool could be in the future.

Our speakers include:

Focus on China
by Andrew Filarowski

I’ve just returned from a very busy trip to China. Whilst I was there I discussed the formation of a region, arranged future training courses in the country, promoted the Society at ITMA Asia and CITME 2010, discussed the Colour Index with dyestuff manufacturers and presented a paper at a conference.

The conference – alongside Adsale, SDC co produced the Third International Textile Conference on New Technology of Dyeing and Finishing in Hangzhou from 18–19 June 2010. This was attended by over 200 people from mills, dyehouses and printing factories from the surrounding area. The area has many such factories and proved to be a very good location to attract the important mills in the area. The full programme of well respected speakers gave the audience a useful insight into innovation and new techniques in preparation, dyeing and printing.

Membership – discussions with current members of the Society in China proved fruitful and we are now well on our way to reaching the target number of members required for the formation of a region.

TrainingCTIC have run two courses in 2010 on Colour Management and trained 12 people in all four modules of this course for which they must be congratulated. SGS China, with the help of Dr Jane Jiang, are taking on the Competence in Colour Fastness training from 2011 as the exclusive agreement with CTIC is coming to an end. Both organisations will provide this course in China in 2011.

ITMAITMA ASIA and CITME 2010, which were being held at this time in Shanghai, provided an opportunity to meet with machinery and dye manufacturers to look at innovations and discuss their involvement in the Society’s activities. A full report will be available in the next edition of The Colourist.

Colour Index – with the help of Professor Shen, who is on the Colour Index Editorial Board (CIEB), visits were organised to Zheijiang Lonsen Group Ltd and Tianjin DEK Chemical Company Ltd. Both dyestuff companies were keen to discuss their involvement in the Colour Index, registration of their products and their subscription to the Colour Index. Tianjin have recently submitted four products into the Colour Index. These meetings were held with AATCC who jointly publish the Colour Index with the SDC. Both parties agreed that these discussions give a basis on which to develop the Colour Index dye section for the future.

The Society has a vital role to play in this large country. Many people are interested in establishing the Society of Dyers and Colourists in China, bringing together coloration research, production and application and developing the ASDC CCol qualification in this country as a professional qualification.
