SDC Colour & Textiles Award Winner announced at Graduate Fashion Week 2007
Northampton fashion student scoops inaugural award
Lindsay Pinder, a BA (Hons) Fashion Year 3 student from the University of
Northampton, was awarded the SDC Colour & Textiles Award at the GFW Gala
Show on 6 June in London. Presented by judges Tamara Salman (design director
at Liberty) and Chris Sargeant (SDC vice-president for fashion/design), the
award is the first of its kind with this being the first year the SDC has
been a sponsor at GFW.
The judges, looking for a creative and inspired use of colour, selected a
shortlist of three finalists from all the students nominated. The winning
collection was entitled ‘Second skin’ and showcased bright all-in-one
catsuits in vivid pink and gold prints. Comments Lindsay, ‘The nomination
and winning of the Society of Dyers and Colourists award has completely
blown me away. It’s such a huge honour to have won, and to know my work has
been recognised at a high standard.’
Lindsay received a prestigious GFW trophy at the Gala Show, where front-row
faces included Victoria Beckham, as well as a cheque for £750 and £250 for
the University’s Fashion Department. On the night, she was also presented
with the Veronica Bell Award, plus £200 of Harvey Nichols gift vouchers, in
memory of the Society’s first woman president.
Fashion design students Claire Hill (Northumbria University) and Lucinda
Abell (London College of Fashion) were also shortlisted for the award.
Comments Chris Sargeant, ‘The SDC took the decision to become a sponsor of
GFW in a move to reinforce its drive into the UK fashion and design sector
and – judging by the number of visitors to the exhibition stand during the
course of GFW week – it was a successful move.’ The colour matching
competition which was running all week at the stand also proved popular with
over 200 students taking part. The daily winners, who will have the
opportunity of profiling their work in the SDC online galleries, were:
Nelson Lo (Nottingham Trent University), Marsha Siagian (London College of
Fashion), Anna Burnett (Edinburgh College of Art) and Nicky Ashwell (UCCA
Epsom).
