SDC Technical Seminar in Sheffield – Last Call for Tickets
- Economic and environment dilemmas examined
- Keynote speaker: Prof. Tony Ryan OBE
A straight talking half-day technical seminar from the SDC entitled
'Staying Alive!' will take place on Friday 19 October 2007, 2.00–5.30 pm, at
the Sheffield Park Hotel. The theme of the event focuses on both economical
and environmental factors facing the UK workforce today. The keynote speaker
Prof. Tony Ryan OBE – a polymer scientist from the University of Sheffield
who actively engages the public in science and technology – will discuss the
dynamic collaboration he is currently involved with that combines the worlds
of art, fashion and chemistry to create solutions to global environmental
dilemmas.
Also speaking will be Michael Heaton, from Huntsman Textile Effects,
discussing progress in dyeing and finishing; and Malcolm Jarvis, managing
director of Naylor Jennings, a Leeds-based textile finishing company, who
will give an overview of how to remain competitive as a UK-based textile
company. There will also be a summary of the ITMA exhibition, which took
place last month in Munich. This will be followed by an informal evening
dinner where Prof. Ian Rattee – the co-discoverer of Procion reactive dyes
in the 1950s with W E Stephen, the only people to have been awarded the
honour of both Perkin and Gold Medals from the SDC – will discuss the
progressing of innovations that have come about since reactive dyes were
developed and will ask what is the future for progressing new ideas in the
present global textile climate.
The day will provide excellent networking opportunities and an exclusive
insight into how some UK companies are successfully retaining comparative
advantage in an increasingly competitive industry. This promises to be a
highlight event of the 2007 coloration industry calendar. With only two
weeks to go to this event, there is still the opportunity to book your
tickets – don't miss out!
Seminar tickets are £35 for SDC members and £45 for non-members, with
evening dinner at £30. Preferential rates have been negotiated with the
hotel and should be booked directly [tel. (44) 1142 829988] quoting 'the
Society of Dyers and Colourists'.
