Colour: Design & Creativity
This, the newest SDC journal, was launched in the autumn of 2007. Colour: Design & Creativity (www.colour-journal.org) is an online-only journal, with issues (from 2010) being published 4× a year. It follows an ‘open issue’ publishing model (implemented in September 2009), which is beneficial to both authors and readers as content is made available online ahead of the full issue being compiled. Occasional ‘special issues’ may be published; please contact the editorial office if you have an idea for a future special issue.
Aims and scope
The journal seeks to nurture a better understanding of colour and its application in design theory and practice, in particular the synergy between colour and design, and will include articles on basic, applied and theoretical research related to colour.
Unique feature
It is the only colour-related journal that provides an interface between art and science, providing a forum for workers in hitherto disparate disciplines to communicate the results of their work and to discuss issues of common interest.
Background
The online colour journal, Colour: Design & Creativity, is a multidisciplinary journal addressing all aspects of colour and design, and specialising in research and review papers dealing with colour design issues. The journal is founded on two intellectual principles:
- Design represents one of the significant interfaces between art and science, and the journal would be dedicated to exploring this relatively unfamiliar area, and to providing a forum for workers in disparate disciplines to communicate the results of their work and to discuss issues of common interest.
- Colour is one of the most fundamental criteria in all matters of design, and therefore the journal will seek to nurture a better understanding of colour and its application in design theory and practice, in particular the synergy between colour and design, as opposed to their individual importance.
Whilst papers of a purely theoretical nature are considered, including those on research methodology, the main editorial aim is to feature material where the practical application of design is covered in the areas (not limited to): technology related papers, as well as those dealing with fashion design, colour harmony, colour forecasting, etc. and research papers on colour psychology, colour emotion, usability testing, etc.
Journal information
Colour: Design & Creativity includes peer-reviewed articles (research, review and explanatory papers, case studies, essays, etc.) and each issue may also include a gallery section, as well as reviews of books, events, collections, installations, etc. The readership includes academics, students, designers, technologists, manufacturers and retailers – indeed, many individuals with professions where colour is an important part of the products or services concerned.
The journal aims to be the premier forum for the publication of reports of research-based and practice-based work in colour- and design-related. Its philosophy is to act as a multidisciplinary journal addressing all aspects of colour and design, featuring articles that systematically describe evidence-based applications of colour in design, art, architecture, fashion, etc. Articles reporting basic, applied, and theoretical research related to colour will also be included. Authors will be encouraged to discuss the practical implications of work reported.
Each article (and gallery submission) is peer-reviewed under the control of the Editorial Panel, with the aim being to maintain the quality of the papers published in the journal. Any individual who wishes to act as a referee for the journal, or to join the Editorial Panel, please contact the editorial office.

Author guidelines
Documents are available for both articles and gallery submissions from the downloads page with full author guidelines (which includes a full list of subjects covered). Material offered for publication should not have been published elsewhere or have been submitted to another journal. Material that has previously been presented at a conference material may be considered as long as the submission to the journal includes additional information and is prepared according to the author guidelines; authors must alert the journal editor that such submissions have previously been presented at a conference, stating where and when the conference took place.
For further information or if you have queries about submitting material for publication, please contact the editorial office.
Submissions
If you wish to submit an article or gallery to Colour: Design & Creativity, please submit via email: editorial@sdc.org.uk. Most review articles published in the journal are specifically commissioned by the editorial team, although we welcome ideas from other authors. If you wish to contribute a review to the journal please submit a brief synopsis which will then be considered by the academic editor, or submit your request using the relevant form on the downloads page. If you have an idea for a 'special issue', please contact the editor directly.
Subscriptions
Since its launch and until the end of 2007, the entire contents of the journal is freely accessible to all users, thanks to funding received from the Worshipful Company of Dyers. From 2011, a subscription-based model will be implemented, with pay-per-view article access for non-SDC members (all content will remain free for SDC members).
